Lecture on Islamic Art of Illumination

Lecture: "Spiritual Expression through the Islamic Art of Illumination (Tezhib) given by Dina Rehab. The Islamic Art of Illumination (Tezhip) is a traditional art that uses earth-based paints and gold to adorn Qur’anic verses, manuscripts, and buildings, such as palaces and mosques. What are the traditional techniques used to create these intricate designs, and how does it relate to Islamic spirituality? Furthermore, how does Tezhip relate to our contemporary understanding of Islam, cultural diversity, and co-existence? Join us to learn more about the techniques, motifs, and geometrical designs of this art, and to discuss the relationship between illumination art and the essence of Islamic teachings. Dina Rehab is a student of the Suheyl Unver Nakishanesi in Istanbul. She is the founder of the Delgammon Handcrafted Collection, a platform for traditional artists to showcase Ottoman and Islamic historical art reproductions and present workshops on traditional techniques. She is currently a Master’s student at the University of Chicago’s Center for Middle Eastern Studies and a student of the Chisholme Institute in Scotland, UK. Her research focuses on spirituality, particularly Ibn Arabi's Oneness of Being (Wahdat al-Wujud).Refreshment will be served after the lecture.
